Have More Questions?

Where is your office located?
My practice is a virtual one. I really believe in making counselling and therapy as convenient as possible. Being location free helps you  choose which location is the best for you.
How long is a typical session?
Sessions are 60 min typically. 30 min and 90min are available to current clients.
How do we do the sessions?
Once you decide to become a client, you will be able to sign up for a client portal. This is the place where you can book your appointments, communicate with me during office hours, and do your video calls there.
Do you accept credit cards?
You have the option of paying by credit card, debit or e-transfer.  All card payments are processed by the practice platform that uses Stripe.
Do you take insurance? Why or why not?
I don’t have the ability to direct bill your extended health benefits for my nursing services. You will need to pay upfront and then apply for reimbursement if you have Registered Nurse coverage. Please take a look at your coverage before your session so you know what you need to get reimbursed.
How do I set up an initial appointment?
The initial appointment or consultation session is up to 30min. This gives us an opportunity to meet and make sure that we are a good fit. I want to make sure that I can in fact help you. I have times set aside in my calendar for intake. We’ll chat and if we’re a good fit I will let you know the next step in creating your online client profile.
What is your cancellation policy?
I require 24hrs notice for a cancellation. If you are experiencing an emergency whether for yourself or a loved on, please let me know as soon as you can.
No shows will be charged for a full session.

If I have to cancel your appointment I will let  you know as far in advance as I can.

What age ranges do you work with?
I work with anyone over the age of 18.
Who do you work with?
I work with all individuals, regardless of how you identify. Anyone who wants to take the time to heal, basically.
What do you do in sessions with clients?
That really all depends on the client and the goal for the session. Client centered care is so important.
Do your clients receive assignments to work on between sessions?
Yes. Creating/learning new coping skills takes practice. I will have you do exercises between sessions to move you towards your mental health goals.
What modalities do you use in your client work?
I go into depth with this question on my About Me page. Check it out.
What is your professional training and experience?
I graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing in 2010, and received my Registered Nurse credential several weeks after that.
I’ve worked in different settings within the health care system, however the majority of my nursing career has been in case management. I have nursed and counselled people, in those different settings throughout my career.
I also have a diploma in Counselling Hypnotherapy from the Orca Institute.

What else does a client need to know to make the most out of working with you?
My approach is solution focused. You’ll  do some hard work when you come to see me. I am not here to watch to you spin your wheels. One of my pet peeves when it comes to counselling is when the therapist doesn’t actually help you to move along and expects you to figure it out. If you knew how to do that you wouldn’t be seeking therapy.  I’m here to guide and support you as you embark on your healing journey which means change and ultimately results.
Will I be successful?
The potential is certainly there, however you will get out of therapy/counselling what you put in. Your commitment to actual change NEEDS to be there and you need to start thinking, and acting differently.

During the course of my career, I have witnessed people time and time again going through the motions of “health” with little to no changes being made. This was because the person either wasn’t ready or willing to make the actual change, or because the benefit of staying the same outweighed the desire for the change. So you will need to do a self-assessment to determine how committed to yourself you really are, and I strongly recommend you do this assessment before you sign up to see me.

But you’re a nurse…how can you counsel?
Yes, I am an RN. While most people think of nurses working in hospitals or clinics, our scope of practice is broad. Counselling is within the nursing scope of practice and we do it all the time in any setting we work in. Being true to who I am and taking into account how I see my career, and frankly milking my nursing degree and license for everything that it’s worth,  I chose to open up my own counselling practice. While it’s not something that you usually see, you’re in good hands.
Do you diagnose?
No, only physicians are able to give you a mental health diagnosis.
You do not need a mental health diagnosis to work with me, and having an official diagnosis will not prevent you from working with me. Those diagnoses are labels that we medical professionals use to determine what is going on and what to do with you.

You are the expert of your own life and you get to determine which medical professionals you want to work with to better your situation.

How confidential is “confidential” when it comes to therapy?
I take your confidentiality very seriously. Not only is it the law, but it’s also an ethical issue. Your story and your experiences are your own. You have the right to share that information as you choose.

Under law, there are only three exceptions to confidentiality. They fall under a clause known as “mandated reporting.” This means that by law I am mandated to disclose if  you’re going to harm yourself, you’re going to harm someone else, or you know of someone unable to advocate for themselves (like a minor, or an elder, or someone who is developmentally unable to self-advocate).  Otherwise, my lips are sealed.

Sometimes, there might be court requests for your information, but we will work on those disclosures together, and you will be aware of what is shared every step of the way.

I use OwlPractice as my practice platform, which is a Canadian mental health platform with servers in Toronto. The platform is PHI and PHIPA and BCNNM compliant.
